There were nine of us this week so two groups again and my group of five started off with Medieval Academy, which was new to everyone. This is a card drafting and area control game about apprentice knights trying to hone their talents in various categories, such as jousting, gallantry, questing etc. The game is a step up from Sushi Go but is not quite as involved as 7 Wonders so it is very accessible and has some nice touches. Over six rounds, players draft a hand of five cards and then play four of them to the various areas, one card at a time going round the table. Some of the areas then score every round, some score after rounds three and six, with a complete reset of areas after round three, except for the two areas of questing and charity which accumulate and only score at the very end of the game. Questing is worth a lot of points at the end but tends to garner lots of competition so you may miss out on more points in other areas in trying to secure control of that one area. Our game actually turned on the very last card as Guy managed to take the lead in questing and cause a fourteen point swing between me and him and giving him the win. Andrew managed not to get any negative points and this allowed him to take second place. I really enjoyed this one and, with there being a number of variant rules in the box, it will be interesting to see how differently it plays with a different set-up.
