Game played: Power Struggle ( eggertspiele ) BGG Id: 55697

This week, there were six of us and, as neither Mark K nor I had prepared for any six player games, we decided to split into two groups of three. Felix and Guy joined me for an older game from 2009 that was still on my unplayed list (although I only picked it up a couple of years ago). Power Struggle is about office politics and trying to have more control over the operations of a multi-departmental company than the other players. It's an area control game where each area (department) gives the person in control a particular benefit for the next round. However, office politics are always susceptible to corruption so you can bribe the owner of that department to give control to you. All of this is working towards a player achieving certain objectives and the first to grab four of these out of the six possible will win the game.

For a game with such a dry theme, I really enjoyed this. The first round was slow as we were still working out what we needed to do to achieve the objectives but it soon sped up after that. The head of department roles and the bribery action are the key to the game and Guy and I were too slow to work out the huge benefit Felix was getting from being the Head of Communications and we really should have worked harder to take that from him. This is because that role gets to set the agenda for the round: How long it will last, what events will arise and when the "year-end" bonus payments get resolved. The fact that it became obvious Felix was going to win about half way through the game may have dampened the ratings a bit but I think that, when played with people who know the game, the result should be a lot tighter. As it was, Felix claimed the victory with his four objectives while I only had two (and was probably two or three turns from possibly getting to four) and Guy had only claimed one.
